On this site, we've tried to include information on amenities and services that
are close to the trails — close enough that people traveling through under
their own power will find them useful. If you've driven to a trailhead, though,
you'll be interested in attractions, businesses, and services farther from the
trail. For information of this kind, we refer you to the visitors bureaus, chambers
of commerce, and city guides for the regions. Here are some:

Related Regional and National Organizations
The American Hiking Society is
the only national organization dedicated to serving hikers and protecting the
nation's hiking trails. From the halls of Congress to the backcountry, AHS speaks
up for America's hikers and the trails they love.
Using waterfront esplanades, park paths, abandoned railroads, canal towpaths,
and parkway corridors, the East Coast Greenway Alliance will form
a continuous trail stretching from Maine to Florida.
The National Rails to Trails
Conservancy supports conversion of railroad grades to trails nationwide.
They have field offices in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
American Trails is
a national, nonprofit organization working on behalf of ALL trail interests to
create and protect America's network of interconnected trails.
National
Recreational Trails provide for numerous outdoor recreation activities in
a variety of urban, rural and remote areas. By 2000, over 800 trails, available
for public use and ranging from less than a mile to 485 miles in length, have
been designated as NRT's on federal, state, municipal and privately owned lands.
Pittsburgh-Harrisburg
Greenway: "Managed by the Allegheny Ridge Corporation and its partners, the
Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Greenway Project is an initiative which brings together
recreation-planning, watershed stewardship, heritage preservation, downtown revitalization,
economic development, and general quality-of-life issues within a single historic
landscape that was once traversed by The Pennsylvania Mainline Canal System..."
Sustainable Pittsburgh "The
mission of SP is to affect decision-making in the Pittsburgh region so that it
integrates economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental quality. We
do so by building diverse coalitions, developing measurable new indicators as
a compass, and undertaking key initiatives. In all of our work we emphasize long
term and sustained quality of life for all citizens."
Alleghenies
Watershed Network "Since its inception in 1996, the Alleghenies Watershed
Network has acted as a forum for education about watershed issues and networking
among the many entities working on watershed projects in Pennsylvania. [...]
These projects include the Watershed Atlas Internet Site, the River Resource
Center in Venango County, and the Allegheny River Sojourn...."
Pennsylvania
Environmental Council "The Pennsylvania Environmental Council improves quality
of life for all Pennsylvanians by enhancing the Commonwealth's natural and built
environments by integrating advocacy, education and implementation of community
and regional action projects. The Council values reasoned and long-term approaches
that include the interests of all stakeholders to accomplish its goals. |
