Camping
Camping on the Great Allegheny Passage is permitted in designated areas only. There are several campgrounds sponsored by trail organizations and other public entities. In addition, there are commercial campgrounds. We've listed the ones closest to the trail below.

YMCA Overnight Camping – (Commercial) -- 1.1 miles from mile post zero in Cumberland
The YMCA is just 1.1 miles from the junction of the terminus of the C&O Canal and beginning of the Great Allegheny Passage. Call the YMCA for reservations and directions.

  • Fenced area for camping with eating shelter and picnic tables, barbeque grill and fire pit
    Indoor shower facilities and access to a complete wellness center, indoor pool, sauna and steam room
    Firewood available for sale

Trail Inn Campground, Frostburg, at The Depot (Commercial) --  mile post 15

Up the switchback from the Frostburg Trailhead.

  • Showers, towels provided

Mason-Dixon Campground (Commercial) - About two miles from mile post 24
Campground is several miles from the trail, 150 yards into Somerset County, PA atop Big Savage Mountain. This campground is not readily accessible by bicycle from the trail.

  • Campsites with full hook ups
    Pull-throughs, back-ins, and lawn sites
    Permanent bathroom facilities with hot showers
    Potable water

Deer Valley YMCA Camp (Fee based, non-profit) - Uphill about three miles from mile post 35
This campground is not readily accessible by bicycle from the trail. Located at the base of Mount Davis, this campground is only appropriate for families and speciality groups. Reservations are required.

    Waterfront swimming
    Craft shop

Husky Haven Campground, Rockwood (Commercial) -- mile 43

Near Mile Post 43 - right on the Great Allegheny

  • Open all year - $10 per night/per person camping. PRIMITIVE Campsites

Potable water & bath house 6/10 mile from campsites

Chemical toilets

Picnic table, trash can

Fire ring, firewood  
Bike wash

Pet friendly

Internet access and cell phone service are available in the office - 400 yards from Rockwood Trailhead (across bridge).

There is spotty cell service in this area.

Huston’s Hickory Hollow Campground (Commercial) - Uphill four miles from mile post 45
This campground is not readily accessible by bicycle from the trail. Reservations are required.

  • Campsites with full hook ups

Youghiogheny River Dam Outflow Area Corps of Engineers Campground (Commercial) – mile post 62
This campground is approximately 200 feet from the Great Allegheny Passage.

  • Campsites with full hook-ups
    Trail user area with tent space and fire rings
    Permanent bathroom facilities with hot showers
    Potable water
    Many other services are available in the town of Confluence.

Ohiopyle State Park (Commercial) -- One mile uphill from mile post 73
Take marked side trail just north of Ohiopyle High Bridge near mile post 73 up steep hill.

  • Reservations are required to ensure campsite availability.
    Tent sites, platform tents, small cabin
    Permanent bathroom facilities with hot showers
    Potable water
  • The campgroungs do completely fill on weekends and is best to have advanced reservations.

River’s Edge Camping and Cabins (Commercial) - mile post 92

  • Campsites with hook ups- Reservations are not required.
    Tent sites include a table & fire ring
  • Full-service cabins - Reservations are required
    Swimming pool – Free to registered campers and guests
    Coin operated laundry
    Convenience store
    Volleyball court, horseshoe pits, half basketball court, children’s playground

Roundbottom Primitive Campground - mile post 99
Roundbottom is adjacent to the trail and fronts the Youghiogheny River, making this location accessible for both trail and river users.

  • No fee
    Groups of 10 or more must make reservations.
    (As of May 30, 2008 this water pump is not working) There is a pump for water.
    Portable toilet from May to September.

Hazelbaker’s Bottom Yough Outfitters (Commercial) - Across the river from mile post 102

  • Some primitive camping available April through October
    Reservations required
    No running water or electricity
    Pit toilets
    Bait, tackle, gift shop.
    Snack shop (with coffee for those cold camping mornings).
    Horseshoe pits, volleyball court, playing field.

  • Two campgrounds - One is for groups and the other is for trail and river users.
    No Fee
  • Permanent restroom facilities
    Potable water located at both sites
    Reservations required for groups

Dravo’s Landing Primitive Campground - mile post 122

Dravo's Landing is directly behind Dravo Cemetery, six miles south of Boston Trailhead, one and one-half miles north of Buena Vista Trailhead.

  • Room for several tents, two fire rings, and two picnic tables.
    Permanent restroom facilities.
    Pump for well water.
    No fee, but groups of 10 or more must make reservations.
